One of the first handful of rugs that I created for the Primitive Spirit catalog, this prototype rug is 14″ X 34″. I hooked it with hand-dyed recycled wools, learning to mix and match colors in a make-do fashion. This rug is a testament to the development of my own style.
Depicting a bird family with their birdhouse, I imagined a design of a primitive tree with a crazy long branch reaching out like a sheltering arm — their humble little place in this world. I found comfort in their simplicity. All their needs would be taken care of. A lesson to be learned.
Here is a view of the back of the rug, where you can see how I finished it with brown binding tape with a sewn-in label that says “designed and hooked by Karen Kahle, Eugene, OR 2000.
A dear sentiment, ready to lift your spirits through the storms of life.
